Folegandros - Chora

A hilltop town, Chora is a remarkable village thanks to its Kastro district and especially its squares, which are the soul of this town. They are unique in terms of vernacular architecture.
A notable point is the juxtaposition of four squares separated from each other by churches, each more attractive than the last. Around them has sprung up a labyrinth of streets paved with green and black stones and lined with houses with their tiny flower-filled courtyards.
The Kastro district was built under Venetian rule and has some similarities with the Kastro of Antiparos and that of Sifnos .

Almost triangular in shape, it has two entrances, two main streets, a large number of covered passages and a square. Very few churches, however, because the place was primarily considered a defense district. It is at its eastern end that the oldest church on the island is located. It is dedicated to Aghia Eleoussa and Agioi Anargyroi and houses splendid icons from the 18th century. The view of the cliffs and neighboring islands is sublime.
The interior layout of the Kastro gives the impression that the rows of houses huddled together form a fortified castle within another. Another particularity: the narrow streets were designed so that the facades shade each other.

Public services  : bus, doctor, pharmacy, post office but be careful! There is no bank but there are ATMs. There are two scooter rental companies and two car rental companies.
