Katapola , is the main port of Amorgos , located 5 km west of Chora . It is located at the bottom of one of the most beautiful natural harbors in the Cyclades . This very enclosed bay brings together three villages: Katapola , Rachidi and Xylokératidi (fishing port) which, with the increase in tourism, have expanded to form only one village. They are surrounded by a fertile valley planted with vines, olive and fig trees and which contrasts strikingly with the bare mountains behind. South of the port, on the hill is the archaeological site of Minoa ,founded in the 10th millennium BC, and where beautiful marble idols dating from 3000 BC have been found in numerous tombs. It takes an hour to walk, and the most favorable time is at sunset . The view of the bay is sublime and you can also see remains of Cyclopean walls as well as ruins of buildings from the Hellenistic era.
Katapola , embellished by numerous eucalyptus trees, is welcoming with its quays which run along the bay and where there are flowery houses, cafes and restaurants. A stepped paved path leads to Apano Yitonia (upper district) with its orchards planted with orange and lemon trees. We will see one of the oldest churches on the island: the church of Panagia Katapoliani . Rachidi , surrounded by numerous eucalyptus trees, is built a little high and offers beautiful views of the plain and the sea.The most picturesque district is that of Xylokératidi with its two-storey houses “feet in the water”, its sloping streets, its caiques and its fish taverns along the squares shaded by tamarisk trees. Formerly a shipyard in the last century and well sheltered from the north winds, it is separated from the two other towns by the valley and retains the character of a charming little fishing port. A path leads to the beach of Agios Pandelimon and the lovely little beach of Maltesi .
