There are numerous fishing ports in Milos . They are located mainly on the north coast of the island. They began to appear around the middle of the 19th century, when the fear of being attacked by Turks or pirates was over, and all have the same characteristics: “syrmata” which means boat garage in Greek . “ Syrmata ” comes from the Greek word “ syrma ” which means iron cable and the verb “ syro ” which means to drag (pull). Indeed, in ancient times the islanders pulled their boats from the water to shelter them using cables. Since then, garages have been dug into the rock and closed with a wooden door. Their primary function was to protect boats from the very violent northern winds. They therefore consisted of a garage on the ground floor and often a small bedroom upstairs with a balcony, accessible by an external wooden or solid staircase, which saved the fisherman from having to return home. Little by little, they evolved and became permanent or secondary dwellings, one or two floors above the garages which always remain at water level. Their colors are generally bright: red, green, blue, yellow.
Klima , located just below the ” Catacombs ” and Tripyti , at the bottom of a valley planted with fruit trees and olive trees, right on the water’s edge, is one of the prettiest fishing ports in the Cyclades , with its garages above houses with colorful wooden balconies and staircases. You can enjoy a magnificent sunset there.
