Paros - Marpissa

Marpissa is one of the prettiest villages in Paros , located in the east of the island, 15km from the main port. It is dominated by a hill topped by the Monastery.Agios  Antonios , built in the 16th century, as well as the ruins of an ancient Venetian castle. The view of the villages, the sea and the island of Naxos is of great beauty. The walk in the old pedestrian village of Marpissa is full of surprises: arched passages, flowered squares, arcades, stepped alleys and above all chapels, most of which are from the 16th and 17th centuries on every street corner. Agios Nicolaos
Square with its murals and its tavern reflect the soul of this picturesque village whose volumes are distributed so harmoniously. The village of Marpissa is renowned for its numerous events throughout Holy Week. On Good Friday the Epitaph procession takes place . It commemorates the burial of Christ. The faithful, with candles in their hands, join the priest and go around the village.

A living Stations of the Cross with all the scenes from the Passion brings this ceremony to a close. On Holy Saturday the bells ring at midnight after mass to announce the resurrection of Christ. The priest pronounces “ Christos Anesti ” which means in Greek “Christ is risen” and lights his candle. The faithful, with a candle in their hand, come to take this “light”. Then they disperse to the sound of firecrackers to return home, taking care that their flame does not go out, in order to mark the lintel of their door with a cross, as a sign of good luck.
Marpissa is also the starting point for many hiking trails.
The beaches of Pisso Livadi and Logaras are 800 m away.
Public services: bus, rural doctor, pharmacy, police station, shops.
