Located to the east of the island, at the top of a rock with steep cliffs, with a panoramic view of the sea and the neighboring islands, the village of Kastro , capital of
the island until 1836, played a leading role in the history of Sifnos . Inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by archaeological excavations, Kastro retains all the characteristics of a fortified town, built during the colonization of the Venetians, from 1630. The elongated dwellings, most of which have two or three floors, form a rampart on the outside leaving only a few openings. Inside, large stately homes make up the second row of dwellings. The streets are narrow, the courtyards of the houses tiny, the public spaces non-existent, with the exception of a small square in front of the Church of Theologou . The vaulted galleries, also called “ loggias ”, the old houses with wooden balconies and carved coats of arms above the doors, the small lanterns, the chapels, the vestiges of the times
ancient scattered here and there, help to highlight the special atmosphere of this village. In recent years, many artisans have set up shop along the main street and pleasant café terraces allow you to refresh yourself in a pleasant setting. Below Kastro , don’t miss a visit to the port of Seralia as well as the Church of the Seven Martyrs , facing the sea, all alone on its rock. It’s crazy romantic!
