Serifos at a glance

Location: in the North-West Cyclades, between Sifnos and Kythnos .

Identity card: almost circular in shape with a very indented coastline, Serifos has a population of 900 inhabitants, an area of 78 km², a diameter of approximately 10 km from one coast to the other, and a coastal perimeter of 70km . Capital: Chora and main port: Livadi .

Characteristics: At first glance, Serifos appears completely barren androcky. According to legend, it takes its name from the ancient Greek “sterifos” which means sterile. However, it is blessed with numerous underground springs which have given rise to fertile valleys here and there where lemon trees, fruit trees and vines have been planted which produce excellent red wine. Mountain ranges with steep rocks, the highest point of which – Mount Troullos – reaches 585 m, occupy the south of the island. The very indented coast is home to very beautiful beaches, numerous gulfs and a multitude of coves. The landscape is characterized by countless terraced crops – half abandoned today – and “sculpted” on the slopes of the hills. Dry stone walls respecting the configuration of the land extend over hundreds of km and merge with the ground where numerous aromatic bushes grow.

Strong points: Serifos is a fascinating island that has miraculously remained outside the “big” tourist flow.It offers the visitor superb wild landscapes, a hinterland molded by the hand of man, very beautiful beaches and coves where you can swim alone.
In addition, it has one of the most beautiful villages in the Cyclades: Chora built on a rocky peak in the shape of a sugar loaf. Ideal for a relaxed, carefree vacation, this small island is aimed at nature lovers, quiet beach seekers and hikers. Don’t hesitate to take the mule trails that crisscross it from one side to the other to discover it gently; understand and appreciate it.

Activities and Excursions:

  • Hiking
  • Discovery of authentic Greece in the hinterland
  • Superb walk from Livadi to Chora, via a zigzag paved path: magnificent panorama
  • Stroll through the streets of Chora
  • Visit to the Taxiarchs monastery dating from the 17th century
  • Discovery of the beautiful beaches of Livadi , Aghios Ioannis and Psili Amnos
